Mount Olive Elementary School has incorporated character education into the Kindergarten classrooms. Each month a theme is chosen and taught in weekly sessions using teacher-made materials. For the month of November, the selected topic was "being a good listener." The three components of being a good listener (eyes on the speaker, think about what is being said, and wait your turn) were introduced using pictures. These elements were reinforced through numerous listening activities, stories, and games. Each student that exhibited these qualities was rewarded with "good listener" medallions.

Grants for Teaching Tolerance programs and community involvement projects have been submitted through teachingtolerence.org and Lowe's Toolbox for Education.

A monthly column has been initiated that will appear in the local newspaper. This column will encourage community involvement by publicizing all of the exciting things that are going on at our school and with our students.

In attempt to increase parental involvement at Mount Olive Elementary School, parents were invited to eat a complimentary Thanksgiving meal with their children. The meal was catered by the school cafeteria and resulted in a grand turnout. This event was so successful that plans are being made for future events of this nature.
